When clients come to see me for injectables, we spend a lot of time talking about volume, structure, and muscle movement. But no matter how precise a lip filler technique is or how smooth Botox makes your forehead, the ultimate result always hinges on one crucial factor: the texture and quality of your skin.
If your skin is holding onto layers of dead surface cells, fine facial hair, or rough patches, light won’t reflect off your face the way it should. That’s where physical exfoliation comes in.
Two of the most popular, effective, non-invasive resurfacing treatments we offer are Dermaplaning and Microdermabrasion. While both clear away dull, dead skin, they work differently and target distinct skin concerns. Let’s break down how they work so you know which one to book for your skin goals.
Dermaplaning: The Smooth Surface & Vellus Hair Remover
If you want smooth skin and a flawless canvas for makeup, dermaplaning is a fan favorite.
How It Works
Dermaplaning is a gentle, manual exfoliation technique. A skilled provider uses a specialized, sterile surgical scalpel held at a 45-degree angle to lightly scrape away the top layer of dead skin cells alongside peach fuzz (technically known as vellus hair).
Key Benefits
- Removes Peach Fuzz: Unlike microdermabrasion, dermaplaning eliminates fine facial hair, leaving skin feeling extraordinarily smooth.
- Flawless Makeup Application: Liquid foundation and powder glide on effortlessly without clinging to hair or dry patches.
- Enhanced Product Absorption: Removing the barrier of dead cells allows serums and moisturizers to penetrate much deeper.
- Gentle for Sensitive Skin: Because it doesn’t involve suction, abrasive crystals, or harsh chemicals, it’s safe for sensitive skin and expectant mothers.
Microdermabrasion: The Deep Texture & Pore Refiner
If your primary concerns are clogged pores, mild scarring, or uneven skin texture, microdermabrasion offers a deeper, high-tech polish.
How It Works
Microdermabrasion uses a specialized handpiece (often diamond-tipped) paired with gentle vacuum suction. As the tip buffing device exfoliates the outermost layer of dead skin, the vacuum instantly sweeps away the debris while boosting circulation and stimulating cell turnover beneath the surface.
Key Benefits
- Clears Congested Pores: The vacuum action helps loosen oil, dirt, and blackheads from deep inside the pores.
- Improves Texture & Tone: Excellent for smoothing out rough patches, softening fine lines, and fading minor hyperpigmentation or sun spots over time.
- Boosts Circulation: The suction mechanism stimulates blood flow to the skin, promoting collagen production and giving you a healthy, natural flush.
Head-to-Head: Which One Should You Choose?
| Goal / Skin Type | Dermaplaning | Microdermabrasion |
| Main Objective | Remove dead skin + remove peach fuzz | Deep exfoliation + unclog pores |
| Best For | Dry, dull, or sensitive skin; smooth makeup base | Oily, congested, uneven, or sun-damaged skin |
| Vellus Hair (Peach Fuzz) | Removes completely | Does not remove hair |
| Downtime | Zero (instant glow) | Minimal (slight temporary redness) |
The Injector’s Take: Pairing Resurfacing with Your Injections
From my perspective in the treatment room, timing is everything.
If you are scheduling Botox, Xeomin, or dermal fillers, I generally recommend scheduling your dermaplaning or microdermabrasion appointment before your injections, or waiting about 1 to 2 weeks afterward.
Getting your skin smooth and freshly exfoliated before receiving injectables creates a radiant, glowing frame for your final results.
